National Coast Guard Day: Honoring the U.S. Coast Guard Birthday and Those Who Are Always Ready

Every year on August 4, Americans have an opportunity to recognize the courage, dedication, and service of the men and women of the United States Coast Guard. National Coast Guard Day commemorates the founding of the U.S. Coast Guard and celebrates the generations of service members who have protected our shores, waterways, ports, and communities.

From lifesaving rescues and maritime safety to national security and environmental protection, members of the Coast Guard serve in countless ways—often far from the attention they deserve.

National Coast Guard Day is a wonderful time to pause, say thank you, and celebrate those who live by the Coast Guard motto:

Semper Paratus — Always Ready.

Celebrating the Birthday of the United States Coast Guard

The story of the United States Coast Guard began on August 4, 1790, when Congress authorized the creation of a fleet of revenue cutters at the request of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton.

That early maritime service eventually developed into what we know today as the United States Coast Guard.

More than two centuries later, the Coast Guard continues its tradition of protecting lives, defending America’s maritime interests, responding to emergencies, and helping keep our waterways safe.

National Coast Guard Day is therefore much more than another date on the calendar. It is a birthday celebration, a day of remembrance, and an opportunity to recognize a remarkable legacy of service.

Always Ready to Answer the Call

There is something especially meaningful about the words Always Ready.

Coast Guard crews may be called to respond during violent storms, dangerous seas, boating accidents, hurricanes, flooding, maritime emergencies, and search-and-rescue missions.

While many of us enjoy peaceful afternoons near the water, Coast Guard members remain prepared for the moment when someone needs help.

Their service can include protecting ports and waterways, assisting mariners in distress, enforcing maritime laws, responding to environmental emergencies, supporting national security operations, and performing lifesaving rescues.

Behind every uniform is also a family that understands the meaning of service, sacrifice, unpredictable schedules, and time spent apart.

National Coast Guard Day allows us to honor them as well.

A Celebration Inspired by the Sea

For this National Coast Guard Day collection, I wanted the artwork to reflect both the strength of the Coast Guard and the beauty of the places its members protect.

Each piece tells the story a little differently.

Although the artistic styles are very different, the heart behind each image is the same:

Gratitude for those who serve.

The Meaning Behind the Lighthouse

The lighthouse felt especially appropriate for these pieces.

For generations, lighthouses have represented guidance, safety, watchfulness, and hope.

They stand along the shoreline through changing weather and changing seasons, shining their light into darkness and helping guide people safely home.

In many ways, those qualities beautifully complement the spirit of the Coast Guard.

A cutter moving through the waves, an American flag blowing in the coastal wind, a lighthouse shining from the shore, and golden light breaking through the clouds all tell a larger story of vigilance, courage, and hope.

That is one of the things I love most about special days like this one. They give us a reason to gather, learn something new, express gratitude, and remember the people behind the traditions we celebrate.

Honoring Coast Guard Families

National Coast Guard Day also belongs to the families standing behind those who serve.

Military families know that service extends well beyond the person wearing the uniform. Spouses, children, parents, and loved ones experience deployments, schedule changes, missed celebrations, uncertainty, and long periods of waiting.

Their strength deserves recognition too.

So today, we send our appreciation not only to Coast Guard members and veterans but also to the families who support them.

Semper Paratus — Always Ready

There is strength in a motto that has endured through generations.

Semper Paratus.

Always Ready.

Ready to rescue.

Ready to protect.

And ready to respond.

Ready to serve.

Those two words represent courage, preparation, commitment, and an extraordinary willingness to answer when others need help.
